October is unfolding and it is finally the time to express gratitude to all the teachers and educators who help in not only shaping our lives but also our futures. World Teachers’ Day is a special opportunity that arrives annually to honour the hard work and dedication of teaching professionals all across the world. While India celebrates the day a month prior, the rest of the world marks the occasion on October 5. There is no better day to express gratitude for the good work that teachers do all across the globe, of which there are many work functions in difficult conditions with limited resources.

On World Teachers’ Day 2023, here’s everything that you need to know how the day came about to be.

Why Is World Teachers’ Day Celebrated On October 5?

October 5 was proclaimed to be World Teachers’ Day back in 1994 to pay respect to the adoption of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation. For those unaware, the recommendation was a part of the intergovernmental conference conducted by UNESCO in Paris. The meeting recognized the contribution of teachers in society and paid homage to their cooperation with the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

After the recommendation was officially adopted, UNESCO declared October 5 to be World Teachers’ Day. Notably, India celebrates Teacher’s Day on September 5 commemorating the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of democratic India.

The UNESCO recommendation emphasized the rights and responsibilities of teachers in education, employment, and recruitment. Ever since its adoption, the recommendation is deemed as an important set of instructions to promote the status of teachers in society thereby encouraging quality education.
