Google’s Gemini LLM gets an upgrade.

Google continues to bring new features and power with the upgraded version of Gemini AI chatbot that will be available to users.

Google has enhanced its free-tier experience with the launch of the Gemini 1.5 Flash AI model. Announced in Gemini’s release notes, the new model brings improvements in quality and latency, with notable advancements in reasoning and image understanding. The Gemini 1.5 Flash is now available to all Gemini users on both web and mobile platforms, replacing the previous Gemini 1.0 Pro large language model (LLM).

First introduced during Google I/O in May, Gemini 1.5 Flash is a streamlined version of the more powerful Gemini 1.5 Pro model. This update follows Meta’s recent rollout of new features for Meta AI, and Google claims that the Flash model offers greater efficiency and speed compared to its predecessor

Gemini 1.5 Flash: Key Enhancements

Expanded Context Window: With the Gemini 1.5 Flash, the company has expanded the context window in Gemini Advanced. They have quadrupled the chatbot from 8,000 tokens to a massive 32,000 tokens. With this upgraded context window, users can have longer back-and-forth conversations and ask Gemini more complex questions and add more context to its generated, more contextually relevant responses—all free of charge.

Enhanced Performance: The company highlighted that the Flash model is designed for faster processing. It prioritizes speed and reduces the input and output processing costs, making it ideal for powering a widely accessible, free-to-use chatbot.

Wider Language Support: The new model will now be available in more than 40 languages across 230 countries and territories, further expanding Gemini’s global reach.

Informative Response Links: Besides performance, Gemini AI will now display additional information on related topics within its generated responses. The source links used by the AI to fetch the information will be presented at the end of a paragraph in a rectangular preview box. Users will be able to see part of the headline of the URL and the webpage in the box.

Earlier this year, Google enabled direct chats with Gemini in Google Messages on select Android devices. Now, the company is gradually expanding this integration to users in the European Economic Area (EEA), the UK, and Switzerland, adding support for new languages such as French, Polish, and Spanish. This update will cover all 40 languages available with the Gemini 1.5 Flash model. Additionally, Google plans to roll out the Gemini mobile app to more countries.
