As the Digital India initiative, aimed at enhancing digital infrastructure, literacy and services, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government completes nine years, it has impacted various sectors.

For example, according to the data shared by the government, over 11 crore farmers now receive financial benefits directly into their bank accounts. Similarly, the generation of over 137 crore Aadhaar numbers signifies that nearly every Indian now possesses a unique digital identity. Aadhaar has been instrumental in streamlining services and ensuring that millions of people have access to government benefits and services.

DigiLocker has issued over 674 crore documents to date. If each document were a single page, it would fill approximately 2.7 million cabinet drawers. This shift to digital documentation has drastically reduced the need for physical storage and improved accessibility.

With 6.83 lakh kilometres of optical fiber laid under the BharatNet project, India’s connectivity infrastructure has significantly expanded. The fiber network is extensive enough to circle the Earth over 17 times, highlighting the efforts to bridge the urban-rural digital divide.

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has processed transactions worth over Rs 535 lakh crore, a staggering amount that could fund the construction of 17,000 Statue of Unity monuments. UPI has revolutionized digital payments in India, making financial transactions more accessible and efficient.

Over 34.6 crore Ayushman Cards have been issued so far, allowing eligible individuals to get cashless healthcare services at both public and private hospitals throughout India. This figure is more than the population of the United States and this initiative has played a crucial role in enhancing healthcare access for millions of Indians. Additionally, more than 9 crore FASTags have been issued. FASTags have simplified toll payments and reduced congestion on highways, contributing to a smoother travel experience.

Acknowledging these remarkable achievements, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on social media: “A Digital India is an empowered India, boosting ‘Ease of Living’ and transparency. This thread gives a glimpse of the strides made in a decade thanks to effective usage of technology.”
